20 Cool Pictures of Earth from Space

20 cool pictures of Earth from Space thanks to National Geographic and a collection of amazing photographers.

Bombetoka Bay - Photograph courtesy Terra/ASTER/NASA and NASA Earth Observatory

Sapphire waters tinged with pink sediment seem to get tangled amid emerald vegetation in a satellite picture of Bombetoka Bay, on the northwestern coast of Madagascar. To celebrate Earth Day—which today received the ultimate Internet accolade, a Google Doodle—National Geographic photo editors selected 20 of the most stunning pictures of Earth, as seen from space, including this jewel-toned shot of the island country off the African coast.

Can Coins Look Sexy?

Coins, in the form of money, have always looked a bit boring. Most coins have a very traditional and classic design - often with a picture of a former president or the queen/king and with several landmarks thrown in for good measures.

The result is usually... well... not something fit for a design site. Until now.

Clever.  You can buy this on the Royal Mint's site if you're interested.  Just sayin' ...

Must Watch Documentaries

What They Won't Show You On Television

Welcome to the Must Watch section. It is our understanding that for a truly democratic society to exist, there must be a free flow of easily accessible information. For the most part (not including heavy censorship in China), the Internet has allowed for this free flow of information to everyone and anyone with access to the internet and it is imperative that this right continues to be protected. Unfortunately, the principle of free flowing information does not exist in the mainstream media because our governments continue to allow large corporations to consolidate the entire media industry. For this reason, many facts, perspectives, and opinions do not make it to our televisions, movie theatres, newspapers, and radio stations.

The documentaries below epitomize the importance of free flowing information and the lack of it in mainstream media. Although the documentaries have been categorized for easier selection, please keep in mind that this was quite a difficult task; not because of the sheer number, but because of the overlapping ideas and themes each documentary has to provide. After all, everything is interconnected.

Please take the time to educate yourself and to educate others about the important issues raised in each of the documentaries. It is important to understand that truth is not a matter of belief, it is a matter of understanding. Spread the Word.

I think this may be a great resource.  I haven't had the chance yet to watch any of these, but the list is very comprehensive

Scientists make teleportation breakthrough

Boffins from Japan and Australia have made a huge scientific breakthrough by successfully teleporting packets of light from one area to another.

The mind-bending project, led by Noriyuki Lee at the University of Tokyo, could lead to the creation of super-powerful quantum computers and revolutionise the telecommunications industry.

The team managed to teleport wave packets of light by destroying them in one place and re-creating them in another.

It's an incredible process that means transmitting large volumes of complex quantum information could be quicker than is currently possible.

The quantum physics term behind this experiment is 'entanglement'. It means that two particles can be bonded in such a way that even when separated by large distances, they are still linked. So what happens to one affects the other.

The team linked packets of light to half a pair of entangled particles. They destroyed one of the particles and the light itself, leaving just one remaining particle. This particle still contained detailed information about the light which they could then use to rebuild the original particle.

This is incredible.  That they did this is one thing, but to even grasp the concept is another ...

Bottle by Kristen Lepore

Bottle

“Bottle”, a stop-motion animation by Kirsten Lepore. Somehow I am six-months late on this so you’ve probably all seen it by now. This is one of the greatest short films I’ve ever seen! Kirsten has crafted something truly magical here, a story with a heart and a soul.

Watch the film below!

This is a great video, I couldn't imagine the effort in making it.  Please share this and let Kristen know!   ...

THE TOWN WITH NO ROADS

Giethoorn in Holland is a beautiful and quiet little village unique in that you will not find a single road in the entire town.  Rather, it is connected by waterways and paths and some biking trails.  Visitors are always welcomed and encouraged to rent an electric and noiseless "Whisper Boat" to explore this little piece of heaven on earth.

Some neat pictures.  Would be a very interesting place to live ...
